Russian Icon of the Saint George. A very popular theme, legend relates that in Lybia a group of inhabitants, pagans who worshipped a Dragon that lived in the lake offered human sacrifices. The princess was to be the next offering, and as she was being led to the marsh, Saint George rode by, cried out in the name of Christ, and slew the Dragon. The people who had witnessed the battle were converted to Christianity. Depiction of the Blessing Hand, emerging from a segment of a circle at the top right-hand corner of the icon, with the inscription that he gains victory not with his own power, but through the power of God’s help and the power of the cross.Circa 1850s.
