Russian Icon of the Virgin of Joy. This subject originated in the 17th century in Russia, but only became popular in the 18th century. Later Icons are often painted with simulated Kopek pieces, in commemoration of a failed terrorist attack, when an explosion caused the contents of a collection box to be blown into the air, some of the coins adhering to the surface of the Icon.
